HDR Photography Tips for Beginners :

Tip 1: Shoot amazing pictures: Take numerous Raw images of the same scenery with different exposures and shutter speed. Use a tripod for taking these images.

Tip 2: The muck look: Softwares like Photomatix, Nik allow you to play around with dirty effect on the picture. It’s easy to create a beautiful and natural image with Photoshop, but in order to muck it up, you need more images. Atleast shoot 8 photos of the same scenery, so you can create another mucked up effect.

Tip 3: Adobe Camera Raw: Always check the following : White Balance, Noise Reduction, Lens Correction, and Cropping. Use Default, or non-Auto, for all exposure, contrast (Linear) and saturation settings. Turn off Sharpening and apply the same settings to all images in the set.

Tip 4: Post Tone Mapping:
Once tone mapping is complete, try the shadows and highlights. Create S Shaped curves to the midtones.

Tip 5: The build quality:
When working in different software programs, make sure the programs support them at each level and transfer files which are 16 bit and more. Always convert the Jpeg to sRGB.

Tip 6: Sufficient space in memory card
Use a 32GB memory card for your DSLR camera. Sometimes you may not use up all the space, but atleast you don’t have to worry about running out of space. After every shoot, transfer the RAW files to your laptop. You can also think of carrying an external hard disk if you are going to be travelling for longer periods of time.

Tip 7 : Backup hard drive
Invest in a cheap hard drive and take another copy of all your work. In case you lose your laptop or if it’s damaged due to nature’s work.

Tip 8: Understand your camera setup
Instead of relying fully on the auto mode on your camera, learn how you can do them manually. Have a base setting for your camera, so after every photo shoot, you can get back to the same setting.

Tip 9: Keep your hands steady
If you are working on different exposures like panorama or HDR panoramas, it’s necessary to take many single images, which can be combined into one final photo. You might need 12 to 30 shots at the same time, so a steady hand is very essential to get the job done.

Tip 10: Use auto brackets.
Many DSLRs are equipped with the auto bracketing mode. When you press the trigger button, your automatically takes 3 or more pictures each in a different exposure.

Tip 12: Shoot RAW (and JPEG).
Yes RAW images take a lot of space and time to download, but it these RAW images allow you to work on the more finer details. JPEG images are compressed and during the process of compression, some data may be lost, But RAW images are “What you see is what you get”.

Tip 13: Take multiple shots.
If you happen to come across something very beautiful, take multiple shots of the same, as you may never know which picture turns out to be the best.

Tip 14: Have fun:
At times it’s good to have fun, Do your work with a lot of zeal and passion, you will enjoy what you are creating.
