Typography Design Contest SOTA Catalyst Award - Entries by 30 Mar 20201

The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA) is an international non-profit organization devoted to the promotion, study, and support of type, its history and development, its use in the world of print and digital imagery, its designers, and its admirers. The SOTA created the Catalyst Award in 2010 to recognize young people who have created original work in type design, type history, or other areas related to typography.

The entries to 11th Annual SOTA Catalyst Award is now open. The award is presented to an individual 25 years of age or younger who exhibits current achievements and holds future promise in the typographic fields. The award gives broad industry exposure to youngsters creating original works in the fields of typography, type design, lettering, calligraphy, and type history.

 

Key Dates and Deadlines

Deadline for submission: March 30, 2020
Notification of Award: April 13, 2020

 

 Requirements

  • The applicant must be 25 years of age or younger on December 31st, 2020.
  • Applicants must be able to attend TypeCon2020 event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA from August 12th to 16th, 2020, and give a 20-minute presentation of their work on Friday, August 14th.

Guidelines for Submission

Entries must be emailed to catalyst@typesociety.org by the deadline for submission.

Entries must consist of one multiple-page PDF file that contains the following:

  • A title page with the name of applicant, date of birth, email, phone number, and postal address.
  • Visual examples of the Applicant’s work in typography. Multiple works preferred. (15 pages maximum). The Recipient’s conference presentation topic must be focusing around the project(s). Both completed and in-progress works are acceptable.
  • A presentation summary with applicant’s brief written description of the work, including its genesis and development. (300 words or less)
  • A statement explaining the applicant’s interest and aspirations in typography. (300 words or less)

All four components must be included for entries to be eligible.

Applications will be judged based on visual examples and the applicant’s interest and aspirations statement.

 

Rewards

The winner will be awarded up to $2,000 USD in reimbursement for transportation and lodging expenses to attend the TypeCon2020 conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA from August 12th to 16th, 2020. They will also have their conference registration fee paid.
