As the extraordinary year of 2020 comes to a close, one of the unifying sentiments that gripped the world has been that of gratitude for everyday joy. As a nod to the theme, Delhi-based art gallery DAG, unveils its exhibition The World Will Go On: A Gratitude Sale, a tribute to the simplicity of nature, culture and mythology. One of the featured painters and award-winning artist, Manu Parekh, elaborates on the concept of the event, “Institutions need to carry on their work even–or especially–when times are bad, since art is something beyond commerce. Exhibitions during this time, however difficult to organise, are a sign of positivity. For those, like us, confined to our homes and studios, they are a sign that the world will go on.” Showcasing a mix of pre-modern and modern artists, the ten-day exhibit seeks to celebrate the ancient legacy of India as well as its relationship with the present. The lineup oscillates between early realist painters including émigré Walter Langhammer, the educationist MV Dhurandhar, followers of the Ravi Varma School,
Aroomoogam Pillay, Bengal ‘School’ masters such as Kshitindranath Majumdar, Sanat Chatterjee, and Ramgopal Vijaivargiya and renowned modernists including SH Raza, MF Husain, Krishen Khanna, Jehangir Sabavala, KG Subramanyan, PT Reddy, Natvar Bhavsar, GR Santosh, Biren De, and Sohan Qadri, among others. The show is divided into six sections and features a mix of prints, paintings and sculptures, with a total of 123 works of fine art.
Eminent feminist painter Gogi Saroj Pal outlines the need for such an initiative during the present day, “Every exhibition has a reason and is curated with a purpose. Given the current situation, this exhibition has even more relevance and is an important step for artists and those connected with the world of art.”
