Pongal Greetings: Thai Pongal (தை பொங்கல்) or Pongal (பொங்கல்) is one of the most popular harvesting festival of Tamil Nadu. It is usually celebrated between January 14th - 16th annually. The four day celebration is a great time for family gatherings and cooking food in the traditional style. Usually a new clay pot is decorated with turmeric sticks and new rice, dal and jaggery are boiled to make a sweet dish. It's then offered to the gods and families sit together and enjoy munching on yummy sugarcanes. It's a time of the year we say thanks to the nature for providing with a bountiful harvest. Pongal is usually referred to as Thai Pongal since it falls in the Thai month according to the tamil calendar. A popular quotation amongst all tamilians,'Thai pirandhaal vazhi pirakkum', people believe that all tricky situations can be resolved during Pongal. We dont know how far it's true, but it's a traditional belief. The first day of Pongal is known as Bhogi, where old things are burnt, second day of Pongal, folks make the sweet rice dish, third day of pongal is mattu pongal, where cows are bathed and adorned with flowers and fourth day is kanum pongal, families get together and have picnics.
